Filtering air, letting you breath clean air inside your car

Inside the Car
What is a cabin Filter and why is it important for you?

Cabin filters are interesting items. They have been first introduced in the 1950s, however only became popular and standard items for cars in the 2000s. As the passenger compartments of cars are small, enclosed spaces, the amount of pollution inside can actually be higher than outside, should pollutions not be filtered.

The air in most cities is polluted. In slow moving traffic or when standing at a traffic light, the air pumped into the car’s cabin would contain exhaust fumes, bacteria and even viruses. Modern cars also have the function to recirculate the air inside the cabin. Adding to that, the air conditioning can, through condensation, become a breeding ground for mould and fungus.

During the pandemic, cabin filters moved into the spotlight, with HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters being offered. However, we do not need to go to such extreme situation to appreciate the work that the cabin filters perform when we are driving our cars. Generally, cabin filters will help alleviate the impact of pollution and allergens.

Cabin filters need very little attention. Filters should be replaced regularly, just like any other filter used in the car. It is recommended to change them at least once a year or after 12 000 to 15 000 kilometres of driving. German Motors will be able to assist you in determining when it would be time for a new cabin filter.

Importance is placed on the quality of the filter. The filtration material has to be of high quality, ensuring that particles and contaminants of a certain size are trapped within the filter medium. Filtration experts will use specific materials in accordance with the car’s OEMs specifications. Another aspect is the fitting of the filter: it needs to sit tight, with a proper seal to prevent air bypassing it. German Motors advises caution when purchasing cabin filters as dubious third parties may offer counterfeit or fake products. German Motors will only source from reputable, authorised dealers.
