VW Polo 9N Reverse Lamps not Working

The Volkswagen Polo, 9N is the fourth generation of the hatchback. It was produced up until 2010. The car has been sold in Malaysia, however it was not very popular and very few units are still running on our road. One problem that may now ocour with with this particular model, as it has aged significantly, are reverse lights not working.

Hella's website is a treasure trove of useful information about how to repair cars. Troubleshooting the reverse lamps failure for this particular model is straightforward:
1) Check bulb
2) Check fuse
3) Check switch for reverse lamp

In this case, the procedure was followed exactly. The bulb and fuse were OK. However, there was no voltage (12V) at the reverse lamp.

Thus, the only possible cause was a faulty reverse switch. The switch was bypassed but the reverse lamp was still faulty.

As part of further troubleshooting, the power supply was checked at the pins of the connector on the reversing switch. In this case, there was no voltage. Upon further inspection of the plug, it was established that it was possible to pull out one of the two cables from the connector housing.
Consequently, a cable break inside the connector housing was the cause for the reverse lamp failure. Normal function resumed after having replaced the connector.
