Replacing original air suspension to normal steel suspension: gains and losses

Modifications
Converting original air suspension to normal steel suspension. What will you lose.

Some high-end German cars come with air suspension. While such systems have their advantages, some may want to opt for a modification whereby the suspension is replaced with regular steel suspension.

German Motors can assist in the conversion of this with technical expertise, sourcing the parts and the actual swap of components.

One of the drawbacks of air suspension is that it is more costly to repair and maintain. The simplicity and reduced number of components in steel suspension makes it easier and therefore cheaper to repair. Identifying any problems with steel suspension is oftentimes also easier.

Overall, air suspension is often seen as less reliable although it is said to be the more comfortable ride. What German Motors has noticed is that the ride handling can be vastly different between brands, especially comparing between European, Japanese and American vehicles. Depending on one’s personal preference, the change to steel suspension can give the driver the desired stiffness in the handling.

Adjustability is another aspect that one will lose in the process of changing over. Furthermore, air suspension is linked to the onboard ECU (Electronic Control Units) and warnings will be displayed in case of any defects. This too, will no longer be available once the air suspension has been replaced.

Most drivers that have opted for the conversion commented that steel springs provide consistent ride height and predictable handling characteristics within their boundaries. In some circumstances, this effect may be more desirable than the softer air-suspension ride.

While there have been such conversions, it is one of the rarer modifications. Thorough consultation should be considered prior to making the decision to go ahead. Our team at German Motors stands ready with insights and technical expertise should you want to have this modification done by professionals.
